{"id":31404,"date":"2020-06-10T16:18:22","date_gmt":"2020-06-10T14:18:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.visitsicily.info\/?p=31404"},"modified":"2022-05-04T17:13:11","modified_gmt":"2022-05-04T15:13:11","slug":"the-ancient-transversal-sicula","status":"publish","type":"itinerario","link":"https:\/\/visitsicily.altrama.com\/en\/itinerario\/the-ancient-transversal-sicula\/","title":{"rendered":"Ancient Trasversale Sicula"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a <strong>650 km<\/strong> trail that cuts across Sicily from west to east, passing through the <a href=\"https:\/\/visitsicily.altrama.com\/itinerario\/entroterra-di-sicilia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">backcountry<\/a>, connecting the ancient Carthaginian city of <em>Mothia <\/em>(today <a href=\"https:\/\/visitsicily.altrama.com\/mozia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mozia<\/a>, in the province of <a href=\"https:\/\/visitsicily.altrama.com\/localita\/trapani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trapani<\/a>), to the <em>Greek cities <\/em>of <em>Kamarina<\/em> and <em>Morgantina<\/em> (in the province of <a href=\"https:\/\/visitsicily.altrama.com\/localita\/ragusa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ragusa<\/a>). <\/p>\n<p>It winds through 8 provinces, 57 municipalities, 6 archaeological parks, 47 historical and archaeological sites, 1 park and 7 nature reserves.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a journey back in time that keeps us anchored to the land of Sicily with its scents and flavours: you proceed on the ancient roads of <strong>wine<\/strong>, <strong>wheat<\/strong>, <strong>salt<\/strong>, <strong>oil<\/strong>, <strong>honey <\/strong>and <strong>sulphur<\/strong>, in landscapes that bear witness to different cultures and picturesque places, through ancient abandoned railways, unspoilt nature and Greek, Sicilian, Sicanian, Elymian and Carthaginian settlements, many of which are recognised as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/visitsicily.altrama.com\/brochure\/siti-unesco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNESCO Heritage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On foot<\/strong> through Sicily, <strong>backpacking<\/strong>, for around <strong>40 days<\/strong>, sleeping <strong>in tents<\/strong> with the chance of being <strong>guests of Organisations<\/strong>, Associations and Prolocos (grassroot movements), crossing enchanting spots between cities and villages, coast and backcountry.
