The sun, the unique soil, the hills and the sea breeze have all helped to create an extraordinary variety of Sicilian wines that play a leading role on the international scene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The island&#8217;s many wineries offer fine hospitality to visitors and tourists with wine tastings in their cellars. They give the public the opportunity to enjoy the fabulous Sicilian DOC and DOCG wines. The wineries produce fine reds, whites, ros\u00e9s, liqueurs and sparkling wines made from local grape varieties including <\/span><b>Zibibbo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the oldest, which was brought to <a href=\"\/en\/localita\/pantelleria\/\"><strong>Pantelleria<\/strong><\/a> by the Phoenicians. Other popular grape varieties cultivated on Sicily include the famous <\/span><b>Nero d&#8217;Avola,\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><b> Nerello Mascalese, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><b> Nerello Cappuccio, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><b> Carricante, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><b> Catarratto, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><b> Grillo, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><b> Frappato, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><b> Perricone <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the<\/span><b> Inzolia.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80% of Sicilian vineyards are concentrated in the provinces of <a href=\"\/en\/localita\/agrigento\/\"><strong>Agrigento<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"\/en\/localita\/palermo\/\"><strong>Palermo<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"\/en\/localita\/trapani\/\"><strong>Trapani<\/strong><\/a>. The latter producing over 50% of the entire regions output. The DOCG <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Controlled and Guaranteed Origin Designation)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the <\/span><b>Cerasuolo di Vittoria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, produced in the Ragusa area, with the Nero D&#8217;Avola and Frappato grape varieties. <\/span><b>Nero d&#8217;Avola<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is Sicily&#8217;s pride and joy. Originally from the south-east, between <a href=\"\/en\/localita\/ragusa\/\"><strong>Ragusa<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"\/en\/localita\/siracusa\/\"><strong>Syracuse<\/strong><\/a>, the vine is now cultivated everywhere, facing off competition from international varieties to become <\/span><b>the Sicilian oenological symbol.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the areas of Trapani and Palermo there are three DOC wines; Alcamo, Marsala and Contessa Entellina. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marsala is one of the most famous <\/span><b>fortified wines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and was<\/span><b> the first DOC wine in Italian history<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is produced throughout the province of Trapani.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pantelleria, Alcamo and Favignana produce their own local wines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Favinia le Sciabiche<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an historic wine, from the island of <a href=\"\/en\/localita\/egadi\/\"><strong>Favignana<\/strong><\/a>. It has been brought back to the table after more than a century thanks to the Sicilian winemakers who are proud of their land kissed by the sun, sea and the winds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sicilia DOC, created in 2011, is one of the most important DOCs in the entire region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the areas between the <\/span><b>DOC Santa Margherita di Belice, Sambuca di Sicilia and Menfi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are wineries that produce interesting wines using both local and international varieties, like <\/span><b>Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The area around <\/span><b>Butera, Riesi and Mazzarino<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the province of <\/span><a href=\"\/en\/localita\/caltanissetta\/\"><b>Caltanissetta<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is home to the Riesi DOC, which produces white, red and ros\u00e9 wines as well as sparkling and late harvest wines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wines from <\/span><b>Etna&#8217;s vineyards <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are highly sought-after. The climatic conditions created by the volcano and the winds from the Ionian Sea give them personality and vibrancy. One of the <\/span><b>island&#8217;s best-known gourmet trails<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is right in the Catania area and goes from Fiumefreddo to <a href=\"\/en\/randazzo\"><strong>Randazzo<\/strong><\/a> via Piedimonte Etneo, where the Vine Museum is located, to <a href=\"\/en\/castiglione-di-sicilia\/\"><strong>Castiglione di Sicilia<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Etna D.O.C. vineyards produce outstanding wines that express the uniqueness of an area through which lava flows. The principal wines of this fantastic <\/span><b>wine tourism region<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are red, ros\u00e9 and sparkling. The red and ros\u00e9 wines are produced from Nerello Mascalese and Cappuccio grapes. The white wines are made from Carricante and Catarratto, Inzolia and Grecanico grapes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three DOC wines come from the <a href=\"\/en\/localita\/messina\/\"><strong>Messina<\/strong><\/a> area: Faro, Mamertino and the very famous Malvasia delle Lipari.\u00a0 <a href=\"\/en\/lipari\"><strong>Lipari<\/strong><\/a>, the largest island of the Aeolian archipelago, gave its name to this golden yellow wine with a delightfully aromatic scent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wines produced in the <\/span><a href=\"\/en\/citta-barocche-del-val-di-noto\/\"><b>Val di Noto <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">region<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are also delightful. Here, and throughout the province of <a href=\"\/en\/localita\/siracusa\/\"><strong>Syracuse<\/strong><\/a>, you can enjoy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moscato di Noto<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a white Muscat, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nero d&#8217;Avola<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a very well-known red wine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Passiti, Moscati and Malvasie, <\/span><b>Nerello Mascalese, Zibibbo and Inzolia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Sicilian wines appeal to the most refined and discerning tastes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to experience new and unusual flavours, you will be interested to know the story of the legendary relic vines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2003, a team of oenologists, farmers, producers and agronomists set out in search of the ancient native Mediterranean vines that were thought to be lost forever. Asking for information, exploring the lands of proud winemakers and elderly people, the researchers identified <\/span><b>15 grapes that had survived over time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and created an experimental site to bring forgotten ancient wines back to life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, there is a growing interest in these archaeological, prized and evocative varieties, which will boost Sicilian wine tourism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take the tourist itineraries that follow the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.assovini.it\/italia\/sicilia\/itemlist\/category\/10-strade-del-vino-sicilia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>wine roads<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to enjoy fine wine paired with the traditional flavours of Sicilian gastronomy.
